Militia

The American Revolution collection continues to make good progress, with the addition of 30 militiamen in two distinct flavors.

The standard pack from Old Glory only comes with three officers, which means you have to commit to the bannerman flying the King’s colors or one of the many many many variants of rebel flags.  Luckily, the Loyalist militia generally used the same banners as the regular troops, so one can be pressed into service from the line units if needed.

You might think the dark reddish coats are ahistorical, and you might be right.  I’ve seen a few paintings with militia in dark brown apparel.  It’s close enough, and it makes my force a little more flexible.

With an even mix of bluish and reddish coats, and 6-8 figures in tan and green, you get the usual eclectic mix.  Or you can pull out the blues and reds and have a single unit of rebel and a single unit of Loyalist militia.

You can see how strong the contrast is in the two proceeding pictures.  The mismatched hats help sell the idea of gentleman Farmers playing at soldier.

Using the Rebels and Patriots method of army building, you can squeeze two complete units of 12 figures each, with enough figures left over to bump one of those units up to a large size.  That would given them more staying power in terms of casualties, but with the usual morale penalty for militia…not sure it’s worth the points.
