The ‘Mother May I’ DM

An older video with some responses that flew under my radar because I don’t follow boring OSR blogs any more. They are all stuck in the old model of play, and just don’t have enough to contribute to the advancement and evolution of the hobby. They also very rarely mention the names of people with whom they disagree, and so I’m repaying them in kind in this post.  Not Ryan and Ash, of course, they are good guys and you should watch this conversation:

So what’s the problem?

I have contempt for the idea of “once corrupted, never cleansed”. It’s loser talk. That objective? That’s the whole point of heroic adventuring.  It also denies the reality of things like exorcism and bless and consecrate, some of which are right there in the rules of the game.  These small minds are pure materialists, except for some reason when it comes to the forces of the Prince of Lies – the spirits of demons are all powerful in their minds.

It also smacks of taking away player earned rewards for DRAMA. It’s cheap and lazy and amateurish.

That same blog post,

And the whole bus clapped and that little girl grew up to be Albert Einstein.

I will quote a friend whose substack is worth checking out and whose appearance on Rolling Bones kicked off the whining.

exactly! if you want to attack players in their castle, there are a billion ways to do that rather than checking random encounters in their once-corrupted bedroom until they flip the table

Of course, the real issue the both of these guys have is that they’re not playing actual adventure gaming. They shouldn’t be the ones coming up with plans to soccer player from reclaiming a castle, the other players should be coming up with plans to stop players from reaching their goals.
